ADSL Forum Congratulates UAWG as Consumer Version of DSL is Prepared for Homes and Businesses

Atlanta, GA (June 8, 1999) -- The ADSL Forum embraces the work the Universal ADSL Working Group (UAWG) has completed in order to establish the commercial readiness of G.lite. The simplified version of ADSL will soon deliver high-speed data communications to consumers over existing phone lines based on an open, interoperable standard developed by leading PC and telecommunications companies that comprise the UAWG. The UAWG was established in 1998 to accelerate the standards-based version of ADSL to the consumer market. Now that it has accomplished this formidable task, it will pass the torch to the ADSL Forum at the SuperComm '99 in order to move ADSL into the new millenium.

"Mass-market deployment of G.lite will be a reality largely due to the work of the UAWG. Enabling consumers to enjoy the opportunities and lifestyle that high-speed access provides in today's constantly changing world is a task that the ADSL Forum is committed to carrying forward," said Hans-Erhard Reiter, Chairman and President of the ADSL Forum. "A significant improvement in the quality of the way we work, live, learn and entertain is made possible by the DSL technology."

By reducing the complexity of the on-site installation at the user's home, G.lite will make it possible to more cost-effectively increase bandwidth for the consumer. Using G.lite, consumers will possess an Internet connection up to 30 times faster than the speed of the current 56 Kbps analog modem technology in an "always on" arena which reflects a dramatically better online experience. The ADSL Forum will continue to provide contributions to the standards process helping to define what's beyond G.lite.

"The success of G.lite deployment depends on a fully standardized technology and complete cross-vendor interoperability," said Kevin Kahn, Co-Chair of the UAWG who was recently elected to the ADSL Forum Board of Directors. "We are pleased that the ADSL Forum will continue to enable widespread adoption of high-speed Internet access for the mass market, shaping the direction of DSL and the related technology."

About the ADSL Forum

ADSL Forum is a non-profit international organization of nearly 300 companies representing the world's computer, networking and telecommunications industries. Established in 1994, it is dedicated to the development and mass-market deployment of broadband communications technologies based on DSL (digital subscriber line) over existing copper telephone cable infrastructures.

The speed that DSL provides delivers high-speed data transfer for applications as diverse as Internet access for email, education, telecommuting or shopping to accessing broadcast quality video and two-way video conferencing - all while providing voice communication on the same line at the same time. Successful worldwide trials have been completed and commercial deployment is well underway in both business and residential markets. Further information on the ADSL Forum is available at www.adsl.com.
