Excite@Home Surpasses One Million Broadband Subscribers
Company Also Exceeds 100 million Page Views for the Excite Portal Network
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 6, 1999 - Excite@Home (Nasdaq: ATHM), a global media company, today announced that its @HomeŽ service now has more than one million subscribers. As a driving force behind broadband, Excite@Home and its cable partners have focused on rapidly deploying the @Home service to the mass market to allow more and more consumers to enjoy the benefits of a high-speed, "always-on" connection to the Internet. The Company also announced that the ExciteŽ portal network has surpassed 100 million page views per day.
The @Home service's one millionth subscriber has been identified as Marco Melo, an AT&T; @Home user living in Chicago, Illinois. In celebration of this milestone, Mr. Melo will receive a personal computer, one year of the AT&T; @Home service free of charge, and the chance to be a contestant on Fox's hit TV show 'Greed: The Multi-Million Dollar Challenge' (see other release http://www.home.net:80/news/pr_991206_02.html ).
"I am so excited to have a cable Internet service from @Home," said Mr. Melo. "It's fast, it's easy, I never have to log-in, and I don't have to deal with those frustrating busy signals that you get with a dial-up Internet service. When I went to Comp USA in Chicago, I tried the service, loved it, and arranged for an installation right on the spot. It was so easy."
Millions of Americans are benefiting from the aggressive deployment of broadband Internet services, which are delivering unprecedented new levels of productivity, efficiency, and convenience. Through the power of cable, Excite@Home is changing the way consumers use and view the Internet.
"We share this milestone with our cable partners who have done a spectacular job upgrading their cable plants and deploying the @Home service," said Dean A. Gilbert, executive vice president of Excite@Home and general manager of the @Home service. "We've had much success in growing the business and bringing the broadband experience to the masses. We look forward to working with our cable partners to continue to deliver a dynamic product offering and provide our customers with additional compelling services as we ramp up for even more accelerated growth in the year 2000."
"AT&T; Broadband & Internet Services has deployed AT&T; @Home to thousands of customers across the country, including in Chicago, Seattle, Dallas, Denver, and the Bay Area," said Dan Somers, President and CEO, AT&T; Broadband & Internet Services (AT&T; BIS). "We congratulate Excite@Home on reaching this impressive milestone. We look forward to aggressively contributing more AT&T; BIS customers to this count as each of us reaches our deployment goals and strives to maintain a high-quality experience for each customer. "
One Million Can't Be Wrong
Excite@Home's milestone reflects unprecedented
demand for and acceptance of high-speed cable Internet services, as well as continued
high user satisfaction. In fact, a November 1999 study by Arthur D. Little, Inc.
found that potential demand for high-speed Internet access via cable far exceeds
cable's current market penetration.
While 1999 is a year of significant milestones, the @Home service remains focused on customer satisfaction. A July survey conducted by Harris Interactive, found that a full 96 percent of @Home customers say they are satisfied with the service. This compares with a 76 percent rating for America Online and an 84 percent satisfaction rating for all other Internet service providers. @Home subscribers lauded the service for its speed, reliability, ease of connectivity, and "always-on" functionality. In addition, PC Magazine readers voted the @Home service as one of the leading Internet service providers. Scoring an 8.6 on a 10 point scale, the @Home service outpaced AOL, GTE, Mindspring, CompuServe, and other leading ISPs on overall service satisfaction.
Getting the Most Out of the Internet
In a recent Harris Poll study, the Company
found that @Home subscribers spend 21 hours online per week, which is approximately
three times that of the average online user who accesses the Internet via a dial-up
connection. @Home's high-speed, "always-on" connection to the Web enables consumers
to accomplish more tasks in a shorter amount of time.
The move to broadband creates enormous opportunities for the growth of e-commerce. A May 1999 survey by Mercer Management Consulting concluded that people with high-speed Internet access make twice as many purchases online as people with low-speed dial-up modems.
Poised for the Future
Excite@Home is focused on providing high-speed, fully
integrated, interactive services aimed to change the way people interact with information

will continue to deliver new forms of information, communication and entertainment
services to the home on multiple access platforms. Excite@Home's "All Band, All
Device, All the Time" strategy calls for Excite's content and value-added services
